About The Episode

This is Part 1 of a 3-Part series on using the Rock Rehab Pyramid to systematically treat climbing injuries. The goal of the Rock Rehab Pyramid is to take a climber from the pain, inflammation and tissue overload stage to gain full mobility, strength and eventually pain-free climbing movement.

In this Episode, Kris Hampton interviews “The Climbing Doctor” remotely to discuss mobility, the second level of the pyramid. This is only the second time that Kris had an interview that was not in-person and it is a rare treat to have this opportunity.

The concept of mobility is discussed throughout the episode and broken down into its key components. Specific exercises are recommended depending on whether the mobility deficit is from a nerve, joint or muscle. Mobility is addressed from every angle and describe how to perform exercises for each body region.

The below topics are discussed in the episode:

  • Shoulder Mobility
  • Neck Mobility
  • Elbow Mobility
  • Wrist Mobility
  • Hand Mobility
  • Finger Mobility
  • Hip Mobility
  • Ankle Mobility

There is also a discussion on how to identify deficits in nerve mobility that may be tricking you into thinking you have a stiff muscle.

This is a very experiential episode, so it is best to listen if you have your hands free. You will be guided into specific stretches, asked to try different self-assessments and encouraged to explore your own mobility limitations.

If you enjoy this episode, make sure to stay tuned for the next episode on Strength and Movement. “The Climbing Doctor” will be sitting down with Kris Hampton at the Climbing Wall Association Summit in Colorado and talking shop on how to utilize your newly gained mobility to perform strength and motor coordination exercises.
